Brainstorm

May 27, 2011

To keep our ideas going, not many were written down and much of our brainstorming was done after were given proposal forms and the like. As such the first time the majority of our ideas hit paper was the proposal. None the less, here are what little notes I, personally, took for our first idea ‘Drummer Boy’

CMP Evaluation

What went well?

The editing process went well in terms of effects, there were some quite intricate effects in the trailer that were accomplished well. The actual filming process it’s self went well in terms of recording video and audio, as well as shots, angles, acting and the like.

What Didn’t go well?

Taking a while to come up with an idea meant we dragged behind a little bit, The pacing was very difficult to keep in the edit, We struggled to bring the video down from 3 minutes and to break the narrative a little bit and make it more like a trailer.

What were my strengths?

My strengths in this project was my experience and knowledge of final cut pro and Photoshop for the advanced effects as well as coming up with my fair share of ideas for the trailer.

What were my weaknesses?

My weaknesses were that I got too caught up in trivial effects than a decent edit, and that we hadn’t expanded the plot as much as I’d have liked to.

What have I learned during the course of this project?

I’ve learnt more techniques in FCP such as the use of the looks filter, color correction, and more general FCP skills and tips. I’ve also learned it’s best to have a perfectly clear image of what you’re going to create before you start it.

What would I do differently?

Were I to do this project again, I probably would not have chosen a horror film to make a trailer for as I don’t really watch them. I would also plan when, where and how to shoot our scenes better as to be better prepared.

Our video varied drastically from our original idea as we changed our idea several times. Once we had settled on an idea however, it still managed to vary quite a bit.

Originally we had planned to do a “Feel good” movie about a young boy learning to play the drums. No one in our group could get into that idea however so, after a few more ideas had been tried out, we decided to do the horror film Possessed.

The final trailer varied from our ideas in a few ways, first of all the way we had written the storyboards, and subsequently the way the video was first edited, was like a short film, giving away too much of the narrative and playing it all out in order. So to fix this we jumbled some scenes up and re ordered the footage. Also the car crash didn’t work as we had planned so it was cut from where we had intended it and moved to the end. We also decided to cut the song Moonlight Sonata as there where to many song changes and it was breaking the pacing.

Health & Safety and Risk Assessment Report

What could go wrong How will you prevent this? What alternatives have you  got in place should you not be able to get around the problem (contingency)?
Rain We would coordinate our scenes so as to match the weather. Shoot a different day. Cover camera and shoot in the rain.
Corridors could have too many people around. Wait to film when there aren’t many people around or when they are in class. Wait until the end of the day when there are very little people around the college.
No portable green screen for car crash scene. Remind Dan to bring something in.Look for something that we could supply that would suffice. Shoot the scene differently by having the camera looking car from the outside, have some one reverse the car away from a wall or another car, reverse the footage in post, cut to black and add a sound effect. Or use the green screen effect without the green screen and rotoscope it in after effects.
Equipment malfunction or become a hazard Double check all equipment before going to shoot. Bring spare batteries. Keep all equipment and wires out the way, paying mind to any routes that need keeping clear. Going to media staffroom and acquiring another camera.

Name: Possessed

Full Plot: A group of 5 teenagers get drunk and one of them, Conner,  starts to steal a car. Violet breaks in and they eventually crash the car. Violet is brutally wounded and will die if she doesn’t receive medical  attention. Oli starts to phone an ambulance but is stopped by Connor for fear of getting caught, because of this Violet does die. Several months later the group has gotten away with it and life goes on. However soon the group starts to notice that each of them are acting strange at different intervals. Beginning with simply acting introverted or quiet but approaching towards scary and even homicidal attitudes. The group eventually figures out that Violet is possessing them to reek her revenge on the teenagers for letting her die. All the teenagers die through out the course of the film save Oli and the film ends with Violet being laid to rest by Oli.

Characters:

  • Jon and Sinead – The couple. Two ordinary teenagers, really only spend time with the rest of the group as to be able to spend time with eachother.
  • Connor – The pretentious jerk. Thinks everyone loves him and spends all his time showing off, is the reason Violet dies as he tells the rest of the group to keep quite about the crash and violets subsequent death.
  • Oli – The nice guy.  The groups salvation and often the voice of reason, Oli is a friend by circumstance who stuck around to try and keep the rest of the group on the straight and narrow, is the first to be possessed and ends up stopping violet at the end of the fil with an exorcism.
  • Violet – The ‘Bitch’. Not a very nice person who generally steps on anyone to get her way, lives life for pure thrills and ends up paying the price. Angered by her friends lack of loyalty, she returns from the dead to reek her revenge by possessing her old ‘frends’ and causing them to attack one another.
